Keep your jewelry looking its best - here are a few tips on how to clean your jewelry.

With the holiday’s coming we are getting ready for parties and entertaining, working on our homes to make sure they look their festive best. We are looking forward to seeing friends and family. This is a perfect time to make sure your jewelry looks its best too. Even your special pieces you only wear a few times a year deserve a little polishing before the holidays. Here are some tips to help you safely clean your jewelry and gems so they can also be at their sparkling best.

  1. Never use abrasives on your jewelry, including tooth paste!
  2. Be safe! Don't wash your jewelry in the sink; you might lose it down the drain.
  3. Don't wash multiple pieces at the same time. Your harder gemstones can scratch and damage softer stones and metals.
  4. Don't use chemicals on your jewelry unless you are positive they won't damage the gems. Stones may have treatments that can be altered by chemical cleaners.
  5. If you wash necklaces that are strung on silk or other types of thread, don't hang these pieces to dry. Hanging wet silk or other thread can cause the silk or thread to stretch. Lay them flat on a clean towel until they are dry.
  6. Never use silver polish on gold jewelry.

  8. If you collect antique jewelry, never put those delicate pieces in an ultrasonic cleaner. We recommend gentle cleaning by hand.
  9. A good rule of thumb is to always put your jewelry on last. Keep jewelry away from perfume, hair spray, lotion and other things you might be using. This will help to keep your jewelry clean.
  10. With pearls, always keep them away perfume, hair spray, and lotion as they can damage them the delicate nachre.
  11. Store your pieces individually so they don't come in contact with each other. This will help protect against damage from that kind of contact.
  12. Generally speaking we don't recommend using home jewelry cleaners or solutions. A gentle soap with luke warm water and a soft cloth are safer home solutions; or, for harder stones you can use a child's tooth brush with the gentle soap and water.
